Why You Should Always Keep a Small Container of Salt in Your Car

Humidity inside a car is a common problem that many drivers overlook. While it often starts as foggy windows on cold mornings, excess moisture can lead to bigger issues over time. Damp carpets and upholstery create musty odors and encourage mold and mildew, while hidden moisture can damage wiring and electronic components through corrosion. Managing interior humidity is essential for safety, comfort, and protecting a vehicle’s long-term value. Fortunately, you don’t need expensive tools to reduce moisture inside your car. One simple and effective solution is ordinary table salt.

Salt is naturally hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. Placing a small open container of salt on the dashboard, center console, or floor allows it to pull excess humidity from the cabin. This passive method helps reduce window condensation, keeps fabrics drier, and costs almost nothing. Lower humidity also improves air quality. Moist environments allow bacteria and mildew to thrive, which often causes lingering odors.
